Pawtrait Atelier
Pino” — for Emma, Amsterdam

The guest book

Pino now hangs above the fireplace. My mother asked whether it had been painted by a real artist.

Pino is a ginger tom with a crooked whisker and a fixed place on the sofa. The photograph Emma sent in was taken on a Tuesday morning, in kitchen light, between two bites of breakfast.

The portrait that came back now hangs above the fireplace — in a room of the house where otherwise only family hangs. That, the atelier feels, is exactly where a member of the household belongs.
